Self-Directed Investments Support Economic Development in NicaraguaFebruary 22, 2017
The SosteNica EcoCentro recently completed an agreement with EMELAL organizacion Italiana, Caritas de Leon y CEPRODEL to jointly manage a training program for young entrepreneurs in León Department, Nicaragua. The program initially is focused on the municipality of Nagarote, where the EcoCentro is located. In 2016, the EcoCentro identified 50 young people, half of whom live in the urban sector of Nagarote and half in the surrounding rural communities, to participate in the program. Introductory sessions were completed in December, and the regular training sessions will begin in February 2017 and end in July, with six full months of practical and theoretical studies.
The training program is modeled on a similar 2008 program in Chinandega Department. The training modules provide the program participants with the tools needed to start a small business including marketing, sales, finance, and general management. The sessions also are oriented to emphasize collaboration among participants, both to enhance learning and provide opportunity to develop multiple integrated businesses. Ideally, this collaboration will promote groups of business that supply and provide services to one another.
The broad objectives of the program are to increase opportunities for young people, providing an incentive for them to stay in Nagarote and Nicaragua, and strengthen the local economy. Upon completion of the rigorous training program, the sponsoring organizations will review the business plans and provide capital where needed and supported by business prospects.
