When we heard about 30 families in Juigalpa, Nicaragua who have been working together for over 4 years to establish the legal and organizational structure to build themselves eco-friendly houses, we set ourselves the ambitious goal of raising $100,000 to subsidize the cost of the construction and materials. The mixed income cooperative will be offered affordable mortages on a sliding scale with a 10 year term. The 30 families in the cooperative have already begun constructing a community hall and are waiting for financing to begin building their houses. You can help them by either donating or investing. A donation of $6000.00 is equivalent to the cost of offsetting ½ the cost of one of the houses, and all donations will be put toward the installation of composting toilets, solar power, rainwater catchment systems, eco-friendly stoves, and other eco-technologies. SOSTENICA, Inc. has been granted tax exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code, so all donations to SOSTENICA are tax deductible. We rely on the generous donations of individuals and investors to finance:
- technical assistance to farmers in the Sustainable Rural Development Program
- agroecology and development training for leaders of CEPRODEL, our Nicaraguan partner organization
- promotion and increased accessibility of eco-technologies in rural and urban communities
- SOSTENICA equity in the credit programs. We pledge to maintain its equity share in the fund at 5% of its Nicaragua portfolio. This equity policy provides investors additional protection from loan loss.
